Meercats and eco-bikes

So, Friday in Auckland.  Can hardly believe I have only been here a week… sometimes it seems like forever!  I have been a fast worker, and managed to get myself sorted with a rented room already, and moved in yesterday.  I’m staying with an Indian family, who have lived in Auckland for just over a year, but spent the previous 3 years living in the UK – Newcastle and Glasgow to be precise.  They are very friendly, and even cooked me some Indian food last night, which was lovely.

With a base sorted now, time to sort out some wheels.  While a Trans Am would be fantastic, I’ve decided to go for 2 wheels instead, and get myself a bike.  Time to get fit!  With a 12 mile ride to Butterfly Creek I think my legs aren’t going to know what hit them, but hopefully I’ll end up in good shape with a healthy glow, and in a state where lugging my backpack round Australia for 3 months isn’t going to be the end of me!  Going to pick up a second/third/multiple hand bike from Adventure Cycles next week.  They seem to run quite an environmentally friendly bike recycling service… I could get a new mountain bike cheaper, but this seems more enviroconscience and a bit more ‘traveller’ to me.

As the bike shop was just round the corner from the zoo, I thought I’d pop in for a visit, and saw two very lively kiwis.  That’s the elusive bird, not the people!  They are much bigger than I thought, and quite sweet.  What else… giant tortoises, smelly hippos, rhinos, etc and popular favourite the meercats!  They had some tunnels underneath the meercat enclosure where you could pop your head up into their enclosure for a closer look.  Mostly they were just fighting or running away from the scary heads that kept on popping up out of the ground though!

Hmmm, Friday night in Mount Eden.  I wonder where the actions at.  Time for tea, then out to find it!
